Marine Phytoplankton Taxonomy Workshop

The Sir Alister Hardy Foundation for Ocean Science (SAHFOS) and The Marine Biological Association (MBA) are delighted to announce that they are jointly running an International Marine Phytoplankton Taxonomy Workshop as part of the Plymouth Marine Sciences Partnership (PMSP).

The workshop is aimed at all those working in the marine phytoplankton field. A basic knowledge of plankton would be beneficial.

The objectives of the course are:

- To provide an updated theoretical background for the morphology, taxonomy, classification and phylogeny of the most important phytoplankton groups.
- To teach methods and criteria for correct species identification.
- To train on methods of morphological phylogeny
- To disseminate information and awareness on toxic and potentially toxic species.
- To teach methods used for isolation and culturing of microalgae.
- To create a forum for discussion of general and specific aspects of biodiversity and biogeography of phytoplankton species.

The proposed program will consist of a series of seminars and practical sessions, with tuition from specially selected international experts.
