Aquaculture is a world industry, which has experienced an important development caused by an augmented demand and world population. In order to increase production and yield new biotechnology, approaches such as probiotic use may lead to a higher quality products, free of antibiotics which are a major concern for costumers.
Probiotics, “biological control agents” have been commonly used in terrestrial livestock and humans and are becoming more popular in aquaculture application since they are friendly bacteria and yeast that can be incorporated in the culture environment or feed to control pathogenic microorganisms, to enhance the growth rate and to stimulate immune functions and survival of the cultured organisms including live food such as rotifers and Artemia, fish, bivalves, crustaceans and shrimp in different life stages, from larvae to adults and even eggs and water.
